Cycle route from Sandringham via Castle Rising to Kings Lynn.....

Friday 7th August 2015

Fortunately, discovered a National Cycle Route from Sandringham to Kings Lynn.

After about 9.5 miles we reach Kings Lynn.

Purfleet Quay and  in the background on the left, is the Custom House, now the tourist information centre.
Ant standing by the statue of George Vancouver, a prominent captain of Kings Lynn in the 18th century.

We learnt that in 1792 George Vancouver was a captain in the British Royal Navy. He was sent to survey the North American coast from San Francisco up the north coast. George was the first European to enter the main harbour of present day city of Vancouver. It is said that many of the places he discovered, he would name after his friends but on this occasion he named it after himself.

Entrance to Castle Rising Castle

Castle Rising Castle

Didn't go in.....  English Heritage rip off ....

However, we have since learnt that it is one of the most famous 12th century castles in England....

Built from 1138 onwards by William d'Albini for his new wife, the widow of Henry I.
In the 14th century it became a luxurious exile-place of Queen Isabella, widow and alleged murderess of her husband Edward II.
